What is Biokinetics?

FAQ's

Biokinetics, when broken down, means life (bio) through movement (kinetics). Fundamentally we use scientifically sound research to prescribe exercises for health promotion, maintenance of physical abilities and final phase rehabilitation. Exercise is our primary modality that we use to improve physical functioning and health.

What is the difference between a physiotherapist and a Biokineticist?

A physiotherapist provides acute treatment to an individual with an injury or condition. They may use manual manipulation (such as massage, needling or shockwave therapy) to treat during this phase. When it comes to injuries, their aim is to get the patient to full range of motion and as pain free as possible. They can also prescribe initial phase rehabilitation exercises. This is where the Biokineticist can take over - once they are pain free and have full range of motion. Thereafter the Biokineticist will take the client from the initial to final phase of rehabilitation. This starts with maintenance of joint mobility and muscular flexibility and is followed by muscular activation, baseline strength endurance and strength training of joint stabilizers and larger muscular groups. The final phase of rehabilitation is sport specific or specific to daily activities, depending on the client’s needs.

When do I see a Biokineticist and how do they fit in?

A whole range of people can benefit from seeing a Biokineticist, you don’t have to have an injury or be prone to injuries in order to see one. People with neurological disorders, metabolic diseases, poor posture, neural pain, cardiac conditions, pre or post-surgery or healthy people looking to get stronger, to name a few, can all benefit.
